Council set to make the borough shine

Cleaner Greener: Cllr Richard Farnell and the Clean and Green Team

Over the coming months, council workers will be trimming back overgrowth, clearing dumped rubbish and giving town centres a deep clean to create clean and tidy areas for residents to feel happier about.

The massive clean-up campaign will make a real difference to where you live in five different ways:

  1. Town centre deep cleans: Say goodbye to graffiti and chewing gum. The council’s got special removal machines that will be used to keep your town centre squeaky clean
  2. Fly-tipping, litter and rubbish: Teams will be out and about removing fly-tipping, litter and emptying bins
  3. Dealing with dog poo: Environmental Enforcement Officers will be out and about encouraging dog owners to pick up after their pets. Dog owners caught dog fouling will be landed with an on the spot fine of £75
  4. Greening borough gateways: Green spaces on arterial routes in and out of the borough have been earmarked for a makeover. Over the coming months these will be trimmed, cleared and planted with new, improved floral displays
  5. Green space maintenance: Parks, gardens and other green spaces will be trimmed, cleared of rubbish and planted with new floral displays

Once the campaign’s got the borough shining, the council will be working hard to keep it that way. That means being tough on those who ruin it for everyone else.

Council leader, Councillor Richard Farnell is thrilled with the difference the Big Clean is going to make to the borough. He said:

“The borough is in for an incredible transformation that will truly make it shine. This campaign will make a real difference to residence by creating a cleaner, greener and safer borough.

“We also want to reward residents who take pride in where they live. Environmental Enforcement Officers will be handing out £10 vouchers for Bowlee Garden Centre to litter champions – members of the public seen picking up a piece of litter on the street and putting it in a bin or residents known to regularly get involved in community litter picks.”

Residents can also help by reporting fly-tipping anonymously.  Tell the council where you’ve spotted fly-tipping, heavy litter and rubbish and give information you think will help the council catch the perpetrators. You can report it online at www.rochdale.gov.uk/flytipping or calling 0300 303 8884.

If an idea will make a positive, lasting difference and benefit the local community – there’s a real chance you’ll see it get the Big Clean 2016 treatment by the council. Watch this space!
