Rochdale ready to celebrate Make Music Day

An evening of free live music is on offer in Rochdale this week as part of an international celebration of music.

Thursday 21 June is Make Music Day, with events being held in more than 800 cities across 120 countries. It’s the UK’s contribution to the international summer solstice music celebration which first started in France in 1982 as Fête de la Musique.

Five venues in Rochdale are taking part, with over five hours of live music being performed from acts ranging from singer/songwriters to an award winning school band. Events are open to all with everyone welcome.

From 6pm to 7pm The Baum on Toad Lane host an acoustic performance by solo artist James Konnavov.

At Vicolo Del Vino you can see local country duo Between the Vines playing their new album ‘Fifty Ways to Beautiful’ from 7pm to 8pm.

Then from 8pm to 9pm The Wellington on Drake Street will host Wardle Junior Blast Band.  The young multi award winning band led by Black Dyke cornet player Lee Rigg, is made up of school children from Wardle and Kentmere Academies, as well as St James, Smithy Bridge, St Andrews, Littleborough, Holy Trinity and St Mary's primary schools. Two months ago they won the 'Band of the Day' award at the National Youth Championships of Great Britain at the RNCM in Manchester.

Over at The Empire on Packer Street from 9pm acoustic guitarist and singer Meg Whittaker from Littleborough will be performing live.

From 10pm The Flying Horse Hotel stages an open mic night. ‘Jam at the Flyer’ will feature and live band and special guest vocalists.

The events to celebrate Make Music Day are supported by Rochdale Town Centre Management and Manager Paul Ambrose said he is pleased to see Rochdale taking part for the first time:

“There will be stages right across the town centre to celebrate Make Music Day with lots of local talent showcasing their skills. Do come along and support the events, it will be great to see so much local live music in the town centre and another excuse to come and try our fabulous venues.”
