Rochdale Borough Council is hosting an event to teach residents how to waste less food and turn their scraps into gourmet treats at Crimble Croft Community Centre, on Aspinall Street, in Heywood, on Saturday, 25 January, from 12-2pm.
Creative cooks will learn how to turn those limp vegetables at the back of the fridge into a culinary delight at this free event run by Recycle for Greater Manchester and delivered by Cracking Good Food.
Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet Member for Place and Regulation, said: “We can all do more to reduce our food waste by buying less and storing food better. This cookery course will spread the message to try to reduce waste and give residents hands on cookery experience and tips on make food go further to save money.”
Food waste is a big problem for both our pockets and environment, and the average family of four can save up to £680 per year by just changing how they shop, store and cook food. Although the amount of food waste in the UK is going down, people still throw away around 7m tonnes of food and drink every year, which would roughly fill the Etihad Football Stadium to the top.
At the event tutors will teach how to make the most of their weekly shop by making money-saving meals and save up to £50-a-month by getting more out of food, using savvy storage and perfect portion control.
Participants will take part in a group cooking lesson from preparation, through to cooking and eating. All food and equipment is provided for free and no cooking experience is required, just bring along an apron and a food container.
These sessions are suitable for vegetarians and can generally accommodate most dietary requirements – please inform before booking.
